WHAT IS “CHILANGA MULILO”?
This is a ceremony that takes place before the marriage ceremony. A day is set for the bridegroom-to-be to be officially accepted by the in-laws and be introduced to various kinds of delicacies that are cooked or baked in their home. Such a function excites the women folk and the men alike as it is an honor to be the center of attraction in the case of the bridegroom-to-be.
THE EXCITEMENT BEGINS
For women, it is a chance to start shopping the traditional regalia that they would wear on that day. The girl’s parents go on a shopping spree to find what to cook or bake on that particular day. The traditional drummer women approach the girl’s parents and showcase their drumming skills so that they may be hired to perform at that function. Other drummers may come making it difficult for the girl’s parents to decide who to hire.
WHICH DRUMMER GROUP IS TO BE CHOSEN?
Couples who are financially sound can hire as many as five different groups of performers to simply add the color to the ceremony. If there are many competitors among the traditional drummers, the hiring fee drops. You would sometimes be surprised to find that only one group is available and the exorbitant hiring fee could meet the expenses of hiring four groups. Sometimes the drumming group that is not chosen is willing to attend the traditional ceremony for interest’s sake. However, the girl’s parents have to give a token of appreciation afterwards.
THE DAY BEFORE “CHILANGA MULILO”
Relatives of the girl’s parents may contribute some foodstuffs to be cooked and presented to the bridegroom-to-be. The relatives from the mother’s side have as much say as those from the father’s side. Both groups work in harmony for the success of the event. Here is where the importance of keeping livestock comes in. People with livestock just slaughter not only a cow, but a goat and a pig as well. If not, the butcheries will celebrate the amount of money you shall dish out to them.
CONFIRMATION OF ATTENDANCE THE DAY BEFORE THE EVENT
Another thing that must take place on this day is to ensure that the bridegroom-to-be is informed again to make a follow up on his friends he has invited for this big occasion to confirm their attendance.
THE ACTUAL DAY
A large crowd of women including the relatives of the girl gather early in the morning at the girl’s parent’s house to witness the cooking and baking that is to be done. Some women take this opportunity to learn or catch up with the know how of preparing certain delicacies. Other counselors are specially assigned to show the bride-to-be how to prepare certain dishes. She is brought amid songs and ululations to take part in the cooking and baking. Other women are there to specifically taste what is being cooked and baked so that they can approve what the bridegroom-to-be is going to eat.
SHOWING THE GIRL’S PARENTS WHAT HAS BEEN COOKED
After everything has been cooked or baked, the girl’s parents are shown every delicacy that their future in-law is to taste. They do not have to taste the food themselves because their representatives have already done so.
THE PROCESSION ITSELF
This is part of an exciting event as drummers take over and lead the procession to the arranged house where the bridegroom-to-be and his companions are. A minimum of two companions is allowed but they encourage you to call a reasonable number of companions to help you demolish the heaps of foodstuffs on different plates and other serving dishes. Songs, dances and drumming relevant to the requirements of the occasion puts every listener and passerby in a festive mood.
HOW THE FOOD AND DRINKS ARE CARRIED
The excited women carry the food and drinks (modern or locally brewed) on their heads. They sing joyously as they dance along to the tunes of the drums. The bridegroom-to-be and his companions are highly expectant as they can hear the noise of the procession from quite a distance. They do not have to come out of the house to welcome the women, but they must wait patiently inside the house until the bridegroom-to-be’s hands are washed before the food is laid before them.
ACTIVITIES INSIDE THE HOUSE
Even before the bridegroom-to-be’s hands are washed, the women dance and lie down in respect of their in-law to be. The companions are expected to dish out some money in appreciation of the cooks and their dancing party. The women would do their best to impress the menfolk so as to receive a generous amount of money. The big chunk of money goes to the leader of the whole procession. This is usually one of the marriage counselors chosen to prepare the girl for the institution of marriage.
THE BEST MAN FOR THE BRIDEGROOM-TO-BE
One of the companions for the bridegroom-to-be should be his best man to help him to understand the rituals or the current happenings. Other companions come in also to explain various things especially if the bridegroom-to-be is from another tribe or nationality. Everything is enjoyable as they look forward to the final part of consuming the foodstuffs and drinks.
ALONE AT LAST
The women retreat to the girl’s parent’s house after presenting all the foodstuffs and drinks they had just brought. It is a relief to the gentlemen as they remain to enjoy eating the different delicacies and the drinks whether modern or locally brewed. They remain in the same house eating and drinking for as long as they want. Other people may join them only upon invitation.
THE PLATES DO NOT HAVE TO BE RETURNED EMPTY
Even before they leave the house where they have dined, a marriage counselor advises not to have the plates returned without any money to show appreciation of the whole ceremony. Therefore, bridegroom-to-be is advised to choose well-to-do kind of men who would help him to ensure that the plates are returned with an appreciative amount of money.
OTHER PEOPLE ARE APPRECIATED
Depending on the amount of money received from the bridegroom-to-be and his companions, the girl’s parents can use part of that money to also appreciate some people who played different roles in the success of the events.
